Melons
Seedlings are available at Longfellow’s for transplanting beginning in Early May. Transplant when soil temperatures are warm and the danger of frost has passed. Plant 2 to 3 seedlings in the center of raised hills, taking care not to disturb tender roots. Plants will vine as they grow. Keep watered and fertilized to produce sweet, tasty fruit. Fruits are mature as the rinds change colors.
The varieties we grow are:
- Ambrosia (muskmelon) – Produces extra sweet, 4 pound fruit with thick flesh. 86 days to maturity.
- Park’s Whopper Hybrid (cantaloupe) – Large, 7-9 pound peachy orange fruit has a very sweet taste. 77 days to maturity.
- Snow Mass (honeydew) – Vigorous vines produce lots of 6-8 pound fruit with very sweet, light green flesh. 80 days to maturity.
