Yew
Yews are a tough, adaptable evergreen with several forms to suit any purpose. Particularly useful for hedges, they tolerate heavy pruning and tough soil.
Featured varieties:
- Densi – 4-6′ tall and wide. Round habit.
- Wardi – 3-4′ tall and 6-8′ wide. Arching/spreading habit.
- Hicks – 10-15′ tall and 3-4′ wide. Columnar habit.
- Citation – 6-10′ tall and 3-6′ wide. Narrow columnar habit.
- Stonehenge – 8-10′ tall and 2-4′ wide. Narrow columnar habit.
Growing Tips:
Plants are either male or female. The female plants produce a soft red fruit in fall. The black seed surrounded by red flesh is toxic and should not be eaten.
Susceptible to winter burn, particularly in an exposed area.
Pruning can be done any time but is best in early spring before new growth appears.
