Boxwood - Columnar Varieties
Buxus sempervirens
Buxus sempervirens
Low-maintenance, evergreen, and deer resistant, Columnar Boxwoods are perfect for screens, topiaries, or as an exclamation point in the landscape. They naturally grow tall and thin and can be sheared regularly to keep a tidy, dense habit.
Featured Varieties:
Dee Runk – 7-8 ft tall by 2-3 ft wide in 10 years.
Graham Blandy – 6-9 ft tall by 2-4 ft wide in 10 years.
Growing Tips:
- Columnar Boxwoods perform best in part shade. Full sun tends to cause scorching.
- Boxwoods do not like wet feet and will not root properly in dense soil. Add organic matter to the soil and consider mounding the planting site to increase drainage.
- Boxwoods typically do not need regular fertilizing. Wood mulch provides enough nutrients as it breaks down, on top of helping to maintain even soil moisture and keeping the roots cool in the summer heat.
- While pruning Columnar Boxwoods isn’t necessary, it does improve the structure of the plant. Prune in late spring after new growth has emerged and avoid cutting into thick, mature stems. Dead or damaged foliage can be removed at any time.
