Butterfly Bush - 'Pugster' Series
Buddleia x
Buddleia x
The Pugster series of Butterfly Bush offers full size blooms on a compact, rugged shrub. Due to their thick, sturdy stems, this butterfly garden must-have is hardier than other dwarf varieties! Butterfly Bushes are also tolerant of hot, dry conditions and resistant to deer, rabbits, and most insect pests.
Plant your Pugster Butterfly Bush in a sunny location with good drainage and you will be rewarded with bright, fragrant blooms all summer- no deadheading necessary! All Pugster varieties max out at 2 ft tall, making them easy to fit in areas with limited space.
Featured Varieties:
Pugster Blue – deep violet-blue
Pugster Pinker – hot pink
Pugster Amethyst – soft lilac-purple
Pugster Periwinkle – pinkish purple
Growing Tips:
- Well-draining soil is a must-have for Butterfly Bushes. Plant in well-amended soil or mound them up to keep excess water at bay.
- Plant Butterfly Bushes where they will receive at least 6 ours of sun for the best blooms and disease resistance.
- Butterfly Bushes are best planted in late spring through early fall. They need time to establish before wet & cold weather sets in!
- While deadheading is not necessary, it does encourage more blooms and tidier growth.
- Butterfly Bushes are late to leaf out- sometimes as late as June. Be patient!
- In Missouri, Butterfly Bushes will likely grow back from the ground each year. Wait until you see new growth to prune off last year’s stems.
