Calycanthus X
Calycanthus, also known as Sweetshrub, is highly coveted for its fruit-scented flowers that bloom in late spring through summer. Even sweeter- this native shrub is deer resistant!
The fast-growing foliage has an open, layered habit that compliments informal gardens and perennial borders, with enough size to provide a glossy green backdrop or a fragrant privacy screen. Tolerant of nearly any soil type, Calycanthus makes a carefree and rewarding addition to Missouri gardens.
Featured Varieties:
Aphrodite – A hybrid of the native western Calycanthus and an Asian species, this variety has big, red to pink blooms that resemble a magnolia. 5-10 ft tall and wide.
Simply Scentsational – The deep maroon blooms of this native are smaller than Aphrodite, but make up for it in numbers- and fragrance! 4-6 ft tall and wide.
- Calycanthus can take full sun in cooler weather, but appreciate afternoon shade in Missouri’s hot summers.
