Featured Varieties:
Bloomstruck – Blooms in shades of rose-pink, violet, or blue on contrasting red stems. 3-4 ft tall x 4-5 ft wide.
Blushing Bride – Pure white flowers that mature to a pink blush. 3-6 ft tall and wide.
Summer Crush – Hot pink blooms against vibrant green leaves. 2-3 ft tall and wide.
The Original – Classic pink or blue flowers on a neatly rounded shrub. 3-5 ft tall and wide.
Growing Tips:
- Macrophylla hydrangeas need mostly shade to thrive in Missouri, but a few hours of morning sun will boost their bloom power.
- Fertilize in spring when new growth appears. Hydrangeas that bloom on new wood should be fertilized again after their first round of blooms.
- While macrophylla hydrangeas need more water than most landscape shrubs, they don’t like to stay swampy. Mix compost into the soil at planting time for better drainage and use 2-3 inches of mulch to help maintain even soil moisture.
- Macrophylla hydrangeas typically do not need pruning, unless they have grown too large. Varieties that bloom on old wood only should be pruned just after blooming, while varieties that also bloom on new wood can be pruned while dormant in late winter. Keep in mind that this will remove the first round of blooms!
- The bloom color of most (but not all!) macrophylla hydrangeas can be manipulated by soil pH. Naturally, they will be pink in Missouri soil. Regular use of soil acidifier such as Aluminum Sulfate will turn them blue or purple, though it may take several seasons to achieve.
