Peppers, Sweet

Plant peppers in the garden AFTER any chance of frost, which is usually early-mid May.  Planting early stunts the plants so that they never bear properly.  Peppers love the heat, therefore plant them in warmer weather.  Water in transplants with a solution of Fertilome Blooming & Rooting.  Mulch with compost, newspapers, and/or straw right away to retain moisture.

Fruit color: The first color is when picking is most preferred.  The second color is a mature stage with more intense heat.

The varieties we grow are:

  • Big Bertha – Long Bell, Matures from Green to Red, 70-73 days to maturity
  • California Wonder – Sweet bell, Matures from Green to Red, Good for stuffing, 75 days to maturity
  • Carmen – Tapered, bull’s horn shaped fruit, Matures from Green to Dark Red, 55-68 days to maturity
  • Cherry Pick – Small, cherry sized fruit, Matures from Dark Green to Red, Good for pickling, 82-85 days to maturity
  • Cubanelle – Sweet, mild flavor, Matures from Green to Red, 68 days to maturity
  • Golden California Wonder – Sweet bell, Matures from Green to Yellow, mild flavor, 62-73 days to maturity
  • King Arthur – Sweet bell, Matures from Green to Red, 65 days to maturity
  • Orange Blaze – Sweet bell, Matures from Green to Orange, Very sweet flavor, 65-70 days to maturity
  • Peppers From Heaven – Sweet, snack sized fruit,  Compact habit makes it perfect for containers, Matures from Green to Red, Yellow, or Orange, 70-80 days to maturity
  • Pepperoncini Greek Golden – 1.5-4 in. fruit, Matures from Yellow to Red, Classic garnish for sandwiches and Greek salads, 75 days to maturity
  • Pimento Elite – Sweet, heart shaped fruit, Matures from Green to Red, Great flavor when roasted, 72-75 days to maturity
  • Pinot Noir – Sweet bell, Matures from Lilac to Red, 68 days to maturity
  • Red bull – Blocky, four-lobed fruit, thick walls, smooth skin. Green to red 5 x 4″ fruit. 85-90 days to maturity
  • Sweet Banana – Banana type pepper, Matures from Yellow to Red, 65-70 days to maturity
  • Tricked You – Jalapeno type without the heat, Matures from Green to Red, 90 days to maturity
