Physocarpus opulifolius

'Summer Wine'

An exciting, improved Ninebark with neat, compact branching and fine deeply cut, dark crimson-red leaves.  A heavenly hybrid which combines the fine texture and compact branching of Physocarpus ‘Nana’ with the dark foliage of Diabolo.  It requires little pruning.  This native variety has pinkish-white, button-like flowers in mid-summer.  It is very showy and extremely hardy.  Prized as a landscape shrub and as a cut flower.

  • Dark purple foliage all season
  • Neat compact branching and arching habit
  • Light pink to cream-colored flowers in May
  • Heat tolerant and durable

The bark peels off in layers, giving the plant the name “Nine Bark”.

Growing Tips:

Can be pruned after flowering.

Grows in any soil, even the most difficult.
