Note how the trunk widens or flares out right at the point that it joins the root system.
This is called the root flare and must be positioned right at ground level. If the root flare is not visible, remove the layers of soil and small roots until the root flare is exposed.
Trees planted too deeply (where the root flare is below ground) will die a slow death, taking four to eight years for symptoms to be visible.
